The Art of Sharpening
A dull scraper will tear the wood fibers rather than smoothing them. Proper sharpening requires patience and the right equipment.
Preparing the Surface
- Flatten the back of the scraper using a honing guide and a diamond plate.
- Ensure the entire back surface is perfectly flat to create a sharp cutting edge.
- Remove all burrs or nicks from the previous sharpening session before starting fresh.
Creating the Burr
- Lightly scrape the edge on a fine-grit stone to raise a micro-burr.
- Check the edge by running your fingernail perpendicular to the bevel to feel for the bite.
- Remove the burr by polishing the edge on a leather strop with honing compound.
The final result should be a mirror-like surface that slices through wood fibers effortlessly.
