Mastering the Grip and Stroke

Techniques for holding the scraper and moving it across the wood grain.

Mastering the Grip and Stroke

How you hold the tool and move it determines the quality of the finish. Poor technique can lead to chatter marks or uneven surfaces.

The Correct Grip

  • Hold the scraper with your dominant hand near the front, using your other hand to guide the back.
  • Keep your fingers curled under to avoid accidental cuts from the sharp edge.
  • Apply light downward pressure to keep the tool flush against the wood surface.

Stroke Direction

  • Always scrape in the direction of the grain for a smooth, tear-free result.
  • For end grain, use a light touch and multiple passes rather than heavy pressure.
  • Overlap your strokes slightly to ensure there are no missed spots or tracks.

Consistency in pressure and angle is key to achieving a uniform finish.
