Fixing Common Chatter Marks
Chatter marks are vertical ridges that ruin the smoothness of a surface. They are usually caused by vibration or an incorrect angle.
Adjusting the Angle
- Increase the angle of attack slightly to reduce chatter on soft woods like pine.
- Decrease the angle for harder woods like maple to ensure the blade bites into the surface.
- Check if the blade is too dull; a fresh edge will cut smoothly without vibrating.
Stabilizing the Tool
- Use a backer block or a sanding block to steady the scraper during the stroke.
- Ensure the wood surface is flat; warped boards can cause the scraper to bounce.
- Apply more downward pressure to dampen any vibration coming from your hands.
With these adjustments, you can eliminate chatter and achieve a flawless finish.
